Skills – Your Hidden Superpower!

Many of us develop skills from an early age, sometimes without even realizing it. Some skills are picked up unconsciously just by being around people who use them. But what exactly are skills? Skills are the abilities and knowledge people use to complete tasks, whether professionally or personally.

The Misconception About Skills and Money

From an African perspective, opportunities to acquire skills are abundant, yet many youths remain unsure of what skills truly mean. Some believe that a skill is simply anything that brings in money. However, most skills do not provide immediate financial rewards. Mastery takes time, patience, and dedication before earning from it.

This is why many young people hesitate to invest in skill development. With pressing financial needs, they prioritize quick money over long-term growth. Even those who begin learning a skill often abandon it midway when it doesn’t bring immediate income. This mindset limits potential and prevents them from seeing the bigger picture, skills are an investment, not just a paycheck.

As a child, I unconsciously picked up dressmaking from my mother, who was a seamstress. She learned the skill out of necessity when she wasn’t working, while my father was the family’s breadwinner. Watching her sew fascinated me, and without realising it, I absorbed the skill.

During my university days, I started making clothes for my friends and earning from it. At some point, my sister joined me, and we even opened a shop when we couldn’t find jobs after graduation. However, life took its course, she got married, I secured a job, and we eventually closed the business.

Similarly, I picked up African hairdressing in secondary school when I noticed my friends needed help styling their hair. I initially did it for fun, but over time, I mastered different techniques. For me, skills have always been something I naturally absorb from my environment.

Conclusion: Skills Are a Lifelong Asset

Skills shape our lives and often evolve into careers that sustain us. I strongly encourage young people to use their free time to learn something new. The skills you acquire today could become a lifesaver tomorrow. No matter your age or situation, it is never too late to learn a skill. Your hidden superpower is within you—unlock it!
