The Power of Cultural Immersion: My Personal Experience
Rethinking Cultural Expertise
I recently read an
article that questioned the idea that cultural immersion turns people into
cultural experts. Cultural immersion means fully engaging with a culture by
actively participating in it. Instead of just visiting a place, you interact
with local people, learn about their beliefs and traditions, and gain a deeper
understanding of their way of life.
My First Taste of Cultural Immersion
My first experience of
cultural immersion was when I went abroad to study. Academic institutions
generally strive to create a friendly environment that respects different
cultures. I began to immerse myself in the local culture when I started taking
part-time jobs, which helped me better understand society. I saw both the
positives and negatives of the culture, but I believe the key is to focus on
the positives.
Language and Local Slang
In terms of language,
I realised that although the primary language was English, it was often laced
with local slang. For me, understanding slang is a gateway to understanding
society. Additionally, I became interested in how local food is served,
especially which dishes complement each other.
The Role of Meaningful Interactions
According to
Tomlinson-Clarke & Clarke (2010), meaningful interactions with a cultural
community are crucial for facilitating learning during a cultural immersion
experience. While it's beneficial to hold strong values, it's also important to
be open to the positive aspects of cultural immersion.
The Challenges and Benefits of Cultural Immersion
Cultural immersion can
be stressful for some individuals, depending on their positionality. For
others, it enhances reflexivity regarding their worldviews and attitudes.
People start to adopt behaviours common to the new culture and learn how to
interact with individuals from that culture, which ultimately enhances their
multicultural competence skills.
Cultural immersion is a journey, and though it may have its challenges, the benefits of understanding and connecting with a new culture are invaluable. Whether it's through language, food, or meaningful interactions, each aspect contributes to a richer, more empathetic worldview.
